In my last few moments of student teaching, I have been observing other English teachers. I sat in a Senior English class and they were extrapolating poetry (and I'm pretty sure I had a tiny orgasm in the back of the room). She read them this poem that really stole my heart. Tell me if you enjoy it.

The Heart
-Stephen Crane (1871-1900)

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.

I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter--bitter," he answered;
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."
