Grandpa

I didn't know
About the hole
You dug as a lad,
Planning to greet China
With an exhausted smile.

I didn't know
About the fear
That rode along beside you
Every time you flew the skies,
Protecting your country.

I didn't know
About Grandma,
Your wife
And the steps she had to take
If you were captured.

I didn't know
About infinite space
And the satellites that orbit your earth
Thanks to you.

I didn't know
About the book
So uniquely written:
Where all your tender secrets
are kept.

Until you finished it.

Meant to comment on this sooner--yes, reading the history is revelatory. And poetic, too, in a way--very nice poem!
